Notes for WILLIAM CLAUDE L. BROWNING:

W.C.L. BROWNING, REMEMBERED

by: Gene Browning

Claude Browning was the 5th child of Henrietta Mulnix, Browning, Steffa, Young,

I have no pictures or written words to share, only stories told to me by my dad. I'm only guessing that my sequence is somewhere close.

Dad was born Jan. 1, 1872, possibly the 1st new years baby in Colorado Springs, CO. If true, what a coincidence, with his mother being in the 1st set of twins born in Chicago, IL.

At the age of 3 years his father passed away and in 1879 his mother (Henrietta) married Daniel Steffa who had substantial land holdings between Cascade and Divide, CO. A stretch along the Ute Pass of about 20 miles.

The original home, I believe, was on the north side of highway 24 about 3 miles east of Divide. They later moved down to Woodland Park. Today a Catholic Church stands where the Steffa' had a milk house.

One Morning on the way to school Dad and his younger brother Frank found a frozen coyote (pronounced: ki-oat, in this part of the world) and set it up in the girls two-holder out behind the school. During the morning one of the girls discovered it an came in screaming. When the teacher got the story from the student she turned to the class and with no questions she said "Claude, you and Frank get that coyote out of there." They went out and stuffed it down the hole.

When a new male teacher came to Woodland Park Dad was going to show him who was BOSS. Dad climbed a support timber in the middle of the room and hung there waiting to be called down. He hung there as long as he could then came down and took his seat without a word from the teacher. Who was BOSS?

The young men of Woodland Park had a contest where two would sit flat on the floor with the soles of their feet against the opponents feet and with their fingers interlaced. The object being to pull you opponents posterior off the floor. Dad and his brother Frank were flat _ _ _ pull champions of Woodland Park.

In the fall of the year there was a wide spread cattle round-up east of Colorado Springs, called the "Pueblo Round-Up". I don't know if Dad was a paid hand, or, more likely, a rep. for the Steffa Brand. One morning he woke up to find a sleeping companion, A RATTLESNAKE!

I think Dad had a dislike of schooling, for himself. He was sent to a Methodist School or college in Nebraska for a time which must have lasted about a month. At Halloween he and some other students dismantled the buggy of the head-master and raised it to the top of a steeple and reassembled it there. That ended his stay in Nebraska.

Dad rode a high-wheeled bicycle from Woodland Park to Manitou Springs, Co., about 18 miles of down hill, unpaved, rough, rutted road. While riding in a rut, he came upon a cow laying in the road and across the rut. NEED I SAY MORE?

While Dad was working in the gold mines in the Cripple Creak District the miners went on strike. The mining companies called in armed strike breakers (goons) who rounded up about 100 of the striking miners, loaded them into box cars and took them to Texas. Dad was one of those shipped out of Cripple Creek.

Dads main source of income in the early 1900's was a variety of well drilling work and road construction .

Dad ran air compressors on both the Pikes Peak Highway and Cheyenne Mountain Road in the Colorado Springs, Co. area.

While on the Cheyenne Mountain job Dad took my brother, Bill, who was about 5 at the time, to work with him. During the day Dad heard Bill calling "kitty, kitty" so Dad checked it out and found Bill trying to coax a bobcat to him.

Dads well drilling included the water well for the city of Mounument,CO. several soda & iron water wells in and around Manitou Springs, CO. The seven minute spring by the town park, which is no longer working, and the well for the White Rock Bottling Company. For several years he was an oil wild-catter in IL., Teapot Dome in Wy. and Burkburnett, Tx., when that area opened up to the oil industry.

Claude' daughter Augusta (Gussie) was a nurse who served in France during WW1. Sometime after Gussie returned home, Dad hat the little finger of his left hand caught in the gears of his drilling rig and the Dr. took it off at the first joint, twice. They removed another piece because of blood poisoning (infection) and it still wouldn't heal. So he sat at the kitchen table and told Gussie "take it off & do it right". When she protested that she wasn't a doctor. He told her "I said: take it off". Gussie did it and it worked out well.

One time while Dad was riding double on a motorcycle with either Sid Mulix or Elmer Hickox, I've forgotten which, they were broadsided by another motorcycle at the intersection of Pikes Peak Ave. & Cascade Ave. In Colorado Springs. Our family lived in Manitou Springs so Dad took a streetcar to go home, but his ankle hurt too much to bear so he got off the streetcar at 25th St. & Colorado Ave. and walked over a mile to his mothers house at 26th & Bott Ave. After that he had steel plates with a bolt for his right ankle.

Dad was one tough man physically when it was necessary but he was a big hearted PUSSY-CAT most of the time.

His only airplane ride was with my brother, Bill while Dad was visiting him in San Diego, CA. Bill had just finished rebuilding & recovering a small two seat private plane. After about one hour in the air Dads first comment was "It's a hell of a note that a man has to wait 70 years to get his feet off the ground".

Notes for MALCOLM GENE BROWNING:

MULNIX history as remembered by Gene Browning Jerry Mulnix Jr. : Friday, October 15, 1999

My Mother was not too (shall we say) "enamored of", my Grandma Henrietta Mulnix Browning Steffa, so I really don’t have much in pictures and few stories. I wish there were more. I have no pictures of anyone in the Mulnix line.

My Father, Wm. Claude L. Browning and Elmer Hickox, had a milk delivery business, I believe in the late 1890’s in Colorado City, which is now the west side of Colorado Springs. They sold milk to all the bars and houses of ill repute, also to a Mrs. Black, who lived in the Broadmoor area, and chewed Dad out when he went to her front door to collect on her overdue bill. Servants & service people used the back door. La, De, Da. He also had as a customer , Bob Ford who shot Jesse James. Ford lived for a short while in the first house west of the West Side Library which is on Pikes Peak Ave. @Court Street.

Shortly after my Mother and Father married in 1901, Dad & his cousin, Sid Mulnix had a timber cutting camp on the back side of Pikes Peak, going, in through Edlow, off what is now Highway 24. If my memory is right, Edlow is just a little west of Divide.

Grandma Steffa (Henrietta), was, according to her own words, A hard backed Methodist and will be until I die" and one Sunday afternoon she came to the camp to visit. Dad, Sid and some of the men who were working with them, were playing cards and Mom got a royal chewing out for allowing such things in her (Mom’s) house.

In 1942 at Easter time a friend, who had a cousin living north of Divide, Colorado, and I spent a couple of days with his cousin. The three of us rode into Divide to get the mail and got caught in a spring blizzard while in town, so we went a mile or two west along theMidland RR tracks to the home of a friend of the boy who we were visiting to wait out the storm. The people who lived there were Mulnix. I was 14 and didn’t even realize that there was a relationship.
